International buyers view thousands of products at the opening day of the China Sourcing Fair

International buyers turned out in the thousands at the opening day of the China Sourcing Fair in Hong Kong. The Fair runs from April 15 to April 18.

From the minute the doors opened for the first day of the inaugural event at the new 70,000sqm exhibition venue, AsiaWorld-Expo, the show was busy. Buyers from around the world arrived on Global Sources' free shuttle buses from key points in Hong Kong. They also arrived via the ultra convenient Airport Express train to the station within the venue. All were ready to do business.

They were not disappointed. More than 1,700 booths at the Fair offer a wide array of the hottest electronics products on the market today — from consumer electronics to electronic components and power supplies. These are supplemented by a large number of exhibitors displaying telecom, security, digital imaging, in-car and computer and networking products.

While many of the exhibitors are the names behind familiar brands and well-known exporters such as Konka, Apollo Worldwide and China Great-Wall Computer, 95 percent of the suppliers are exhibiting in Hong Kong for the first time.

Many volume buyers pre-registered with the show, including members of Agentrics, an organization representing 50 global retailers with US$1 trillion in annual sales. Members include Carrefour, the second-largest retailer world, Sears, and Metro, Germany's largest retailer.

Agentrics' Executive Chairman, Christopher Sellers, said: "This venue is spectacular, and the show is very well organized. The number and quality of the exhibitors offers buyers from Agentrics member companies many new sourcing opportunities — with great convenience in Hong Kong."

Other buyers at the show agreed: "Based on what we have seen so far, we are going to meet our aim to explore new potential suppliers," said David Leng, the product manager for Singapore based EXER Technologies. "We are also delighted with the design-to-export theme of the show because our business is to service OEM clients as well as R&D [design] houses", he added.

With two halls of the fair turned over to more than 500 suppliers of active and passive components and supplies, Exer will not go away empty handed in its search to fill its long buying list of electronic components. The show features the largest selection of components exhibitors of any event in Asia this spring.

Global Sources chairman and CEO, Merle Hinrichs who praised the Hong Kong SAR government's "foresight and vision in building a world class facility with more than 70,000sqm of column-free exhibition space — all on one level", opened the event.

"The Fair is perfectly timed to complement other sourcing shows in Hong Kong and southern China and offer buyers more specialized exhibits to visit," he said. "This will make Hong Kong truly Asia's Trade Show Capital."

He told a guest list of distinguished guests attending the opening that the global demand for China made products and merchandise from through the region is insatiable, citing China's exports of more than 53 million MP3 players and US$1.1 trillion of passive components among other examples.

The China Sourcing Fairs are an important part of Global Sources' sourcing and product information services, which include Global Sources trade magazines, Global Sources Online and Global Sources Direct.
